VETERANS HEALING INITIATIVE AWARDS GRANTS TO PROVIDE
SUBSTANCE ABUSE, TRAUMA TREATMENT FUNDING FOR VETERANS
Loyola Recovery Foundation and Samaritan Village of New York, La Paloma of Memphis
Receive Grants for Veterans’ Dual-Diagnosis Treatment
GREENVILLE, S.C. (December 20, 2011)—The Veterans Healing Initiative (VHI) today
announced the awarding of grants to Loyola Recovery Foundation of Pittsford, New York,
Samaritan Village of New York, and La Paloma of Memphis, Tenn., to provide clinical treatment
for military veterans suffering from substance abuse and trauma disorders, including Post-
Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The three grants total more than $300,000. VHI is the nation’s first and only nonprofit
organization solely dedicated to providing access to treatment for substance abuse and trauma
disorders to veterans who would otherwise go without care.
“VHI is committed to funding treatment for substance abuse and trauma for these men and
women who have served our country,” said Margaret Stone, VHI’s chairman and president.
“Even as U.S. troops withdraw from Iraq, our soldiers continue to struggle with physical and
psychological pain from their service. These invisible but very real injuries include PTSD,
prescription drug addiction stemming from chronic pain management, and sexual trauma among
women veterans.
“Federal and public programs are overwhelmed, and too many veterans struggle to get clinical
and medical care,” Ms. Stone continued. “VHI is committed to expanding the treatment network
available for these men and women, and getting them the medical and psychological care they
deserve. We’re pleased to make these grants to Loyola, Samaritan Village and La Paloma, which
were based on comprehensive reviews and clinical evaluations gauging their effectiveness in
helping veterans heal from these devastating war wounds.”
Loyola Recovery Foundation, operating in partnership with the Veterans Administration,
provides addiction recovery treatment to veterans through its facilities in Albany and Bath, N.Y.
Samaritan Village provides dual-diagnosis treatment and a continuum of care through two
residential programs for male veterans in New York City and one residential program for female
veterans in Ellenville, N.Y. La Paloma provides in-patient, dual-diagnosis recovery and trauma
programs for veterans through its facility in Memphis.
VHI’s mission is threefold: To pay for the cost of substance abuse and trauma disorder treatment
to veterans who would otherwise go without care; increase the number of clinically and
medically approved dual-diagnosis treatment programs for veterans; and to achieve measurable
outcomes that affect patient care, and share those findings with the broader healthcare
community.
