Below is a list of the types of programs that are eligible for inclusion in the VHI treatment network, and the clinical criteria that programs must meet in order to be included.
Clinical Criteria for VHI Applicants
Eligible Programs Include:
a. Detox; Medical Stabilization
b. Primary Residential
c. Transitional Living
d. Intensive Out Patient
e. Sober Living
Selection Criteria:
- All facilities must have a demonstrated track record as a dual-diagnosis treatment facility.
- All facilities must have a demonstrated record of experience with evidence-based treatment of substance abuse and PTSD concurrently.
- All programs must present a detailed plan on how to engage veterans in treatment and a detailed analysis of how they will accomplish this.
- All programs must be licensed and have the licensed staff necessary to deliver the proposed services including program expertise accreditation in the following:
- Military experienced staff
- Specialized capabilities for addressing trauma for female and male veterans
- Specialized capabilities for addressing sexual trauma for female and male veterans
- Capacity to treat substance abuse and trauma
- Programs must have the organizational capacity to deliver the proposed services.
- Men and women must have separate trauma tracks.
- Pain management therapies including but not exclusive to massage therapy, acupuncture, PT, yoga must be administered at treatment facility.
- Programs must utilize evidence-based approaches and modalities. For example, consult http://nrepp.samhsa.gov/ , SAMHSA’s national registry of evidence based programs and practices or Society of Clinical Psychology, American Psychology Association, Division 12 (http://www.psychology.sunysb.edu/eklonsky-/division12/index.html).
- Programs must have a comprehensive understanding of recovery and encourage the use of 12-step programs.
- Programs must demonstrate a continuum of care and navigate clients through this continuum with clinical expertise starting at intake with a comprehensive written medical, mental status and addiction assessment treatment plan
- Programs must have a proven efficacy with discharge and aftercare planning and clients must be monitored for at least 30 days post discharge to help with facilitating secure, appropriate connections in the transition to aftercare.
- Programs must have expertise in addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine with specific expertise in pain management and medication management.
- Programs must have significant links to community resources including:
- VA Hospitals and Vet Centers
- Community-based veteran programs
- Family Courts
- Veteran Drug Treatment Courts or Drug Treatment Courts
- Faith-based groups
- Social services
- All programs must track patient outcomes as per VHI’s criteria. Outcomes will be tracked using VHI’s on-line data forms and must also be tracked using psychometrically valid instruments. Programs need to demonstrate that they already have a ‘track record’ in routine outcome assessment and an infrastructure to support that.
